History of Tioga County Prison

Tioga County transferred all inmates from the old jail which was next to the courthouse, to the new facility on Shumway Hill Road in August of 1989.  In August of 2004 a new addition was completed, providing a total number of approved beds to 142.  Tioga County Prison provides assistance to other counties by renting bed space to other authorities.

   The department provides care, custody, and control of all people committed by any proper legal authority.  Department staff supervises the daily operations including the following: Commitment process, Orientation, Classification, Inmate Rules and Procedures, Housing, Clothing, Bedding, Food Service, Personal Hygiene, Medical and Health Services, Visiting, Telephone Communication, Mail, Work Release Programs, Access to Legal Resources, Religious Services, Recreation, Commissary, Inmate Disciplinary Procedures, Security, Treatment Services, Community Involvement, Incoming Publications, Sanitation, and Maintenance and Safety.
